Armed for Battle: An Army of Entrepreneurs Book Review
Many books are published each year on professional development, creative entrepreneurship and business communications. Some come armed with terms du jour. These are buzzwords that may sound cool but are just fluff in real life…much like the books that introduced them.
At first, I thought Army of Entrepreneurs by Jennifer Prosek is just one of those cheesy, flash-in-the-pan business self-help books. With terms like “Army of Entrepreneurs” and “Commission for Life”, it has the makings of a Barnes & Noble book signing tour and possibly landing a guest spot in one of the daytime talk shows. As skeptical as I was, I started the first page. I didn’t realize I was halfway through the book when I looked up.
Jennifer Prosek writes like she’s been in the trenches. She had put in her time, paid her dues and learned from experience to perfect the steps in building her so-called Army of Entrepreneurs. Her system of motivating employees through Commission for Life may be too radical for some entrepreneurs. Simply put, the idea behind Commission for Life is “to create an incentive that keeps on giving across the employee’s career at the company and aligns the individual’s goals with the company’s goals.” It sounds theoretical but money does prove to be a huge factor in performance for a lot of employees in general. And for those who put a premium on job satisfaction more than pay, this system offers a sense of ownership and accountability for employees who like the feeling of fulfillment.
The best parts of the book come at the end of each chapter. Aptly called “Six Steps Forward” it brings concepts and ideas into concrete steps. A lot of business books nowadays are good on paper but come up lacking in real-world application. Prosek dissects everything into feasible tasks. In turn, this will get you started in applying what you’ve learned in no time.
This is actually the best selling point of the book. Every idea introduced in a chapter is rooted in real-world application. Jennifer Prosek will give you a detailed step-by-step process on implementing the AOE concepts in your company. From training syllabus to actual scripts you can use for the workshops, she breaks it down pretty simple – something that is not too radical for your employees to accept but still maintaining its effectiveness in revolutionizing your company culture.
Like any good army, it begins with good training. This book not only tells you how to build an army but also gives you the weapons to sustain it. You will need those in your arsenal to become the great general of your company.
